Ah, Sonic's last stand on the Genesis in the form of Sonic 3D Blast. While the hastily
assembled Saturn port was less than tolerable, the Genesis original was a fine way for the system
to go to console heaven. It's not really "3D" and it's just not as exciting as Sonic's previous
platformers, but it's still something of a classic and a solid side game that should be given a
fair chance before you cast it away to the demon pits from which it was spawned.
Rom Variations
Sonic 3D Blast (International) (1996)
The game went by two names, Sonic 3D Blast in the States and Sonic 3D Flickies' Island
elsewhere, but there is only rom of it, so set your console or emulator accordingly. The only
difference between the three region modes is the title screen and the way "color" is spelled in
the various Satanic messages spread throughout the game.
Related Roms
Flicky (International) (1991)
This is generally assumed to be the precursor to 3D Blast, released even before the original
Sonic. Flicky was one of Sonic's critter friends in Sonic 1 (alongside Cucky, Pecky, Picky,
Pocky, Ricky, and Rocky) and his solo game was released in arcades in 1984. In any case, this is
a port of the arcade game where the objective is not unlike that of 3D Blast; ring up all the
Chirps in a level and take them to the exit before moving on to the next level. Wow. Uh, and by
the way, it sucks. Play it in Japanese mode for Japanese instructions, if you're into that sort
of thing.
Compilations
Classics Compilation (North America/Europe) UNCONFIRMED
Although 3D Blast itself was never featured in any compilations, its odd cousin Flicky was.
This compilation groups our Chirp ringing hero with Gunstar Heroes, Alex Kidd, and Altered Beast.
The collection originally debuted in Europe under the banner of "Mega Games 4-in-1".
Sega Top 5 (Latin America) MISSING
This is an officially licensed compilation by Brazilian Sega supplier Tectoy that includes
Super Thunder Blade, Flicky, Sega Soccer, Shinobi, and Super Monaco F1 Grand Prix. Not the "top
five" we could have hoped for, but at least it's sort of big. |
