It's not much of a game standing alone (despite selling out nationwide in three days) and most were somewhat disappointed with it, but larger, deeper levels and a various improvements to the traditional Sonic paradigm let Sonic the Hedgehog 3 take the series a step further than Sonic 2 ever dared to. It also introduced Knuckles the Echidna, who quickly joined Sonic and Tails to form "the original three" and helped shape the identity of the series (of course, Knuckles wouldn't really join until eight months and fifty dollars later). Rom Variations
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (North America/Europe) (1994)
This is generally assumed to be an international rom, but the header says it's only for the North American region. It runs fine in European mode but gets rather stubborn when you attempt to give it a go on a Japanese console. Since all other Sonic games have international headers (except Spinball, which is also just American), this is strange. Very strange. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Japan) MISSING (1994)

Sonic 3 & Knuckles (International) (1994)
This is the only way to play Sonic 3 or Sonic & Knuckles (since it adds Knuckles and S&K to Sonic 3, and Tails and a save feature to S&K). When you lock on a cart to Sonic & Knuckles, the Genesis treats it as one large rom (when it's actually two separate roms, or even three when you lock on Sonic 2). This one large chunk of data is impossible to dump, but it is quite practical to combine both the Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles roms together and apply some basic hex editing to get the save feature to work, which is what was done here. Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Here is a perfect save file for Sonic 3, with all three characters cleared with all seven emeralds. Place the file in the main or rom directory of whatever emulator you use and rename its extension to what your emulator uses for SRAM. Sonic 3 & Knuckles
